Nobody's nervous about workout number two hundred. It's the first one — walking into a gym where everyone seems to know each other, wondering whether you'll be in over your head by minute ten. If that's the thing keeping you from starting, this post is for you.
Here's exactly what your first week or two at Black Iron Athletics looks like, step by step, so there's nothing left to imagine.
It Starts With a Conversation, Not a Workout
Your first visit isn't a workout. You'll book a free consultation, come into the gym, and we'll sit down together in the office. We'll talk about what you're looking for in a gym, what your goals are, and when the last time was that you felt genuinely successful with your training. That last question matters more than people expect — it tells us what's worked for you before, what hasn't, and what needs to be different this time.
Then we build a plan together. For some people that's long-term personal training. For most, it's getting into group classes as quickly as possible — which starts with Foundations. And if what you actually need is something different, we'll tell you that too. You'll walk out knowing exactly what your path looks like, whether or not you take it with us.
Foundations: One-on-One Coaching Before You Ever Join a Class
Every new member starts with Foundations — one-on-one sessions with a coach, three times a week, before you ever step into a group class. Most people choose the six-session version, which runs two weeks. If you're coming in with more training experience, the three-session fast track gets you through in one.
Here's what happens in those sessions:
- A body-composition scan. Your baseline numbers, measured the same way members measure theirs every month. From day one, your progress is tracked against yourself — not against anyone else in the room.
- A movement analysis. Your coach watches how you move and finds what's tight, what's weak, and what needs attention — before any of it can become a problem under load.
- The functional movements, taught properly. Squatting, pushing, pulling, carrying, running, and building your engine. One-on-one, at your pace, with a coach correcting every rep.
If your biggest fear is getting hurt — and for most people walking into a gym after a few years away, it is — Foundations is the answer to it. You learn to move before anyone ever asks you to move fast.
Your First Group Class
When you finish Foundations, we don't just wave you toward the schedule. We help you find a class time that actually fits your life, show you how to reserve your spot in the app, and walk through exactly what to expect on day one.
Your coach will already know you're coming — we tell them a new member is joining their class. Introduce yourself anyway. Our coaches want to know your name, your goals, and what you worked on in Foundations, and that thirty-second conversation is the start of them coaching you well for years.
Then the part that surprises people: the class is built for you to succeed in. Every workout is programmed at three levels, so you and the athlete who's trained here for ten years do the same class side by side without either of you compromising. You'll recognize every movement from Foundations. You won't be guessing, and you won't be the odd one out.
Practical stuff, since everyone asks: wear normal workout clothes, bring water, and show up a few minutes early. That's it.
The Part Nobody Expects
People walk in expecting equipment and coaching. What actually surprises them is the community. Members, coaches, ownership — everyone here is welcoming, accommodating, and genuinely helpful, and everyone is welcome regardless of background or athletic ability. Nobody cares what you can lift on day one. They care that you showed up.
That's not an accident — it's the whole point. We're here to build each other up and improve our lives through movement, good habits, nutrition, and community. Our mission hasn't changed since 2013: we help everyday people become everyday athletes. Everyday people is where every single one of us started.
Ready for Week One?
If you're weighing the decision, two other posts might help: our honest breakdown of what gym memberships cost in Frisco, and our guide to getting back into working out after time away.
And when you're ready, the first step is the easy one — a free consultation. It's a conversation in the office, not a workout, and there's zero pressure at the end of it. Book it, show up, and we'll map out your first week together.
