6 Things You Should Know Before Joining CrossFit

So, you’re searching for ways to get healthy and actually have a great time doing it? You’ve heard about CrossFit from a friend or a friend’s friend, seen images on social and now you’re interested in what’s CrossFit and would this actually work for you.

Here are six (6) things you should know before you get started.

1) Start with an open mind.

Regardless of your fitness experience, walk in the door with a beginner’s mindset and leave your ego behind. We don't care how much you lift, how fast you can run a mile or what you look like. What we care about is setting you up for a happier and healthier relationship with your training. If you happen to lift some heavy weights and break some personal records along the way, AMAZING! But it’s more about showing up, learning how to move properly and then working to improve slowly and safely over time. You got this!

2) You are joining a community and a gym.

There’s a good chance you’ve heard about CrossFit not from a commercial or ad but from someone who's done it and can't stop talking about it. You may have heard people call CrossFit a cult. It’s almost impossible to fully explain how amazing the CrossFit community can be until you walk in the door and see it for yourself. There’s a true family dynamic and unbelievable amount of support of each other’s hard work. Coming together and building a happier, healthier community. There’s no doubt you will find your next best friend at our gym. Try a FREE Class and you'll see what we mean.

3) You won’t get bored!

You will never find yourself bored with the WODs (Workouts of the Day). It’s different every day! There are certain benchmark CrossFit workouts you will run into every now and then. This is a great time to test your fitness and watch your improvements! And because the method is scalable, you can make it easier or harder for yourself. And the great thing about CrossFit workouts is they technically last no longer than 25 minutes.

4) CrossFit is safe.

You may have mentioned “CrossFit” to someone and they immediately responded with “You will get hurt!” There’s a misconception CrossFit is dangerous. Any workout regimen can be unsafe without proper guidance and knowledge. CrossFit is designed as a well balanced approach to #health, and #fitness. With smart programming and knowledgeable coaches, you will find CrossFit can change your life for the better.

4) It's a marathon, not a sprint.

It's important to have realistic expectations when you’re starting a new exercise program, group training class, or personal training journey. Just like investing your money, you rarely want to go all in on black expecting to strike it rich. It’s safer and wiser to slowly invest into something less risky than the roulette table. It may take a little longer to see a return on your money, but you will be in much better shape by the end of it. The same logic applies to your health and fitness goals. The time and energy you take to invest while avoiding any unnecessary risk along the way will pay off.

5) Don’t let confusion get you discouraged

When you first walk into a CrossFit gym you may feel intimidated by the lingo. Don’t feel overwhelmed. Everyone starts somewhere. Questions are encouraged and welcomed by the coaches. You will not get everything on day one…maybe not even 30 days in. But before you know you it will be using the acronyms like a second language.

6) Yes, you CAN do it!

Honestly, this is the biggest hurdle people have to get over when doing something new, especially when it comes to fitness. Believing you can! It sounds simple but it can keep you from taking the leap for years and you will have wished you started sooner. At Black Iron CrossFit we have a program called Elements designed to teach you the basics of what we do in CrossFit and where you start your journey. It doesn’t have to be scary or complicated.
